What's New in AI Video and Image Right Now

by The CCC team

Summarize this article with

Key takeaways

  • Seedance 2.0 now has native 4K, ready to use today.
  • Seedance 2.5 generates a full 30-second clip in one shot, but launched in China first.
  • Gemini Omni edits by conversation and remembers your notes, but watermarks everything it makes.
  • Seedream 5.0 is a new ByteDance image model, still early with little confirmed.

Two companies did most of the talking this month, ByteDance and Google. Both put out real, usable updates this time. Here's the short version so you can catch up fast and get back to work.

ByteDance pushed Seedance hard

At its Volcano Engine conference on June 23, ByteDance did two things at once. It gave Seedance 2.0 native 4K, a true 3840 by 2160 straight from the model, and it announced Seedance 2.5, which generates a full 30-second clip in a single shot.

You can use the 4K today. The 30-second model launched in China first, so most of us are still waiting on it. We went deeper on both, and on the copyright question hanging over 2.5, in our full Seedance write-up.

Google launched Gemini Omni

Gemini Omni is one model that takes text, images, audio, and video and makes all four back. You edit it by talking to it, and it remembers your earlier notes as you go.

There's one thing to know before a client job. Everything it makes carries a hidden watermark that tags it as AI, and the mark survives cropping and re-export. We covered the good and the catch in our Gemini Omni breakdown.

Seedream 5.0 also dropped

ByteDance put out a new image model too, Seedream 5.0, in the same batch as Seedance 2.5. It got less attention on stage, so there's less confirmed so far. We're digging into it and will report back once we've run real prompts through it.

What to skip

Around every big release, a wave of smaller tools shows up with slick demo reels.

Treat those demos as ads. The gap between one polished clip and your first ten real tries is usually huge, so wait for real user work before you switch anything over.

Where we land

Two things are worth your time this month:

  • Seedance 2.0's 4K, which you can use today
  • Gemini Omni, which is the most interesting direction anyone's shown in a while

Everything else is worth a glance and nothing to rebuild around. See you next month.
